Sustainability
The first regenerative hotel in Formentera
At Dunas de Formentera, we enjoy the leisurely pace on the island, as we honor and protect its natural environment.
Dunas de Formentera is a sanctuary for enjoying the leisurely pace of life in Formentera, honoring the untouched and pristine natural environment and promoting the nature that surrounds us. This commitment is reflected in every aspect, from sustainable design and furniture to meticulous operations and management.
In this sense, we are the first regenerative eco-luxury resort in Formentera. Each of the spaces will be self-sufficient, using only renewable electricity sources, regenerating all the water consumed, guaranteeing purchases from local producers and implementing a project to regenerate local marine life in Formentera through a match-founding program, thus demonstrating our commitment to the preservation of the territory.
Our policies and actions are part of the framework established by the GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council). This framework established by the GSTC focuses on promoting sustainable and responsible tourism throughout the world. To achieve this objective, a series of criteria have been established that must be met by all tourism service providers, including hotels. These criteria include Sustainable Management, Social and Economic Benefits for the Local Community, Cultural Heritage and Environmental Protection. Our objectives for 2030 are underpinned by four basic pillars that allow us to go beyond reducing our impact and actually leave a positive footprint.
Decarbonization
Our goal is to reduce our carbon footprint by 25%, training all managers to implement procedures that encourage employees and customers to use resources sensibly. The decarbonization objective also includes investment initiatives, such as installing solar panels, offering electrical transfer services and only using energy from renewable sources and operational control systems to monitor consumption.
Zero Waste and Zero Pollution
The second pillar involves minimizing waste. It is with this in mind that we removed all unnecessary plastic packaging and replaced it with alternative processes or other less polluting materials. We have completely eliminated single-use materials in the hotel and transformed 80% of waste into usable resources. We also use organic waste to produce compost, which is delivered to farmers throughout Formentera. We implemented a circular economy program that is designed to recover waste and turn it into new products that are incorporated into the customer experience. Last but not least, all of our cleaning products are biodegradable and our pool is treated with salt electrolysis.
Regeneration of the destination
At Dunas de Formentera we run a program for the conservation of Mediterranean biodiversity, working alongside local entities dedicated to marine conservation and regeneration. We support these projects by encouraging our guests to donate a small amount of the total value of their stay and, once we have the total amount collected, we at Dunas de Formentera double the donations received from customers to increase the contribution.
People
The wellbeing of our employees, the local community and, of course, our customers, is the central focus of all our objectives. Our people program focuses on ethical and inclusive hiring (primarily from the local area), education initiatives with sustainability training for all employees, and the prioritization of local and social companies that meet our purchasing criteria.
